Meet Stephen: A Journey into the World of Store Design
We're excited to share an exclusive interview with Stephen (@StephensWorld), a seasoned developer specializing in website and store design. In this latest blog post, we delve into his journey and expertise.
Stephen's story began at a young age when he first started building websites. His passion led him to work with Shopify, eventually founding his own freelance web design business, Stephen's World. Today, he focuses on designing new stores and managing migrations for clients.
Stephen has a unique ability to turn rough ideas into fully functioning online stores and websites. He especially enjoys working on large projects, which allow him to build a strong portfolio showcasing his skillset. In this interview, we’ll explore the intricacies of store design, drawing from Stephen's vast experience and insights.
1. What are some common challenges merchants face when designing their Shopify store, and how do you help them overcome these?
The overall look and feel of a store are largely determined by the chosen theme. It’s crucial to select one that aligns with the client’s vision, as this minimizes the need for custom coding. Stephen often asks clients to share websites they like and then suggests themes that reflect their preferences.
A significant part of Stephen's work involves working with the selected theme to create a polished, professional website. He typically starts by creating an initial mockup using the chosen theme to give clients a preview. If a theme change is necessary, it’s best to make that decision early in the process.
Stephen also emphasized the importance of identifying the client’s required features and functionalities upfront:
“An important aspect of the store setup is dialing-in exactly which features/functionalities the client needs, at the start of the project.” - Stephen
2. Could you share some key elements to consider when designing an online storefront that enhances user experience and boosts sales?
A well-organized navigation menu greatly enhances the shopping experience by allowing customers to easily find the products they’re looking for, without having to flip through numerous pages. This can be achieved through multi-level dropdown menus and filtering options directly on collection pages.
While apps are available to assist with filtering, in most cases, a carefully structured navigation menu and properly tagged products can ensure smooth functionality without the need for additional tools.
The difference between a 'decent' and a 'great' store often lies in the quality of the graphics. Even with top-notch products and competitive pricing, poor imagery can drive customers away and undermine their initial trust in the store.
“It’s important to identify assets/content that could use improvement, with the hopes of making the store look more professional, and thus lead to higher levels of trust and conversions with customers.” - Stephen
For store owners, making a strong first impression is crucial. If the owner doesn’t invest in a professional logo, high-quality banner images, and clear product photos, it begs the question: why should a customer choose their store over a competitor’s?
3. Can you share an example of a successful store design you've managed? What made it successful?
Spotlighting a single store is always a challenge, but we'd like to highlight WishGifts.ca, a part of Make-A-Wish Canada. This charity’s mission is to support children battling critical illnesses, and their website allows donors to purchase digital eCards, with proceeds going towards fulfilling children’s wishes.
Since its launch, the store has experienced remarkable success. Some key factors contributing to this include:
Easy navigation
Customizable digital eCards (special thanks to Tim at the eCard Widget app)
French translation capability
The Make-A-Wish team’s promotional efforts
“95% of wish children said their wish improved their well-being and helped them overcome feelings of sadness.” - Make-A-Wish team
For me, success is measured differently. While metrics like load speed and sales are undeniably important, I place more value on the client’s satisfaction. My focus is on questions like: Does the client have all the functionality they need? Are they pleased with the design? Do they consider the website a success?
While the client is responsible for marketing the site and generating sales, my role is to ensure they have all the tools and support needed for success. I aim for clients to feel that their investment was worthwhile. In my line of work, the client’s experience is just as important as the final product. My advice to anyone entering this industry is to be professional, patient, and avoid rushing the process.
4. How do you keep up with the latest trends in eCommerce design, and how do you incorporate them into your work?
Staying up to date with theme and app versions is essential. What worked well a year ago might not be the best solution today, so it's important to keep an open mind and explore new themes and apps.
Conducting thorough research for each project and seeking out the best solutions can significantly contribute to client satisfaction.
“The forums can also help with knowing what to avoid; being able to navigate potential pitfalls is very important, as you don't want to lead your clients into potential issues down the road.” - Stephen
Participating in the Shopify Community has been particularly valuable for me. It keeps me informed about the latest issues, optimal solutions, and overall trends. Answering forum posts allows me to dive into unfamiliar Shopify-related topics, which enhances my learning without the pressure of having to provide solutions for paying clients right away.
5. How do you see the future of eCommerce design evolving, and how should merchants prepare for these changes?
Online Presence for Businesses
Every year, more businesses are recognizing the benefits of online selling. There’s still significant potential for expanding brick-and-mortar stores into the online world, or even turning 'content-only' sites into full-fledged ecommerce platforms. By selling products, offering online bookings, or providing payable services, businesses can broaden their reach and accessibility, primarily through their websites.
One-Page Checkout on Mobile Devices
With most online traffic now coming from mobile devices, I predict a shift towards simpler, 'one-page' websites. Shopify has already streamlined their checkout process to a single page. The quicker a user can find and purchase a product especially on mobile the better their experience will be.
AI in Task Efficiency
AI is a major trend that will continue to simplify the process of building and managing websites and stores. From setting up the website to sourcing products and generating content, AI will make these tasks far more efficient in the next 3-5 years. It will also have a huge impact on advertising and marketing, including content creation and ad placement. Early adopters of AI will be better positioned to capitalize on its benefits.
Drop-Shipping Improvements
We can expect significant advancements in drop-shipping over the next 3-5 years. With continuous improvements in shipping and fulfillment, especially post-Covid-19, businesses can expect better product variety, cost efficiency, and faster delivery times from drop-shipping companies.
New Social Media Adoption
Lastly, new social media platforms are expected to emerge in the coming years. Early adoption of these platforms could be extremely advantageous, particularly for smaller, growth-oriented businesses. Gaining a strong presence on a new platform early could lead to significant long-term benefits.
Navigating the dynamic world of ecommerce requires staying informed, being adaptable, and prioritizing customer experience. We hope this conversation with @StephensWorld has provided valuable insights to both business owners and aspiring Shopify partners.
